The 3 Series has been a staple in BMW’s lineup for years, and the latest 2023 model is no exception. The refresh includes subtle exterior changes, a 48-volt mild hybrid system and the introduction of BMW’s curved display.
The 340i continues to use the celebrated 3.0L inline-six that’s helped define the 3 Series as a sport sedan for decades. But now, the engine has an extra punch thanks to a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
That added oomph adds a whole new level of fun and performance to the sedan. It rips off a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds in the RWD variant and 4.1 seconds in xDrive.
It also makes a great commuter car, delivering enough power and responsiveness to keep the ride comfortable while still giving you plenty of control over its handling. I took it on a long trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and while some people might think that the M340i could be a little too intense for everyday driving, I found it to be a very capable partner for highway speeds.
Inside, the cabin is a logically designed environment with a quality finish and well-appointed features. It’s not quite as luxurious as its competitors, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t pleasing to the eye. The 8th-generation iDrive is a slick way to handle many functions through either touchscreen or rotary controller input.
This test model came with the M Sport package, which adds 18-inch M wheels, blue brake calipers, unique bodywork, variable sport steering, a limited-slip differential and M-specific suspension. It’s also topped off with an M-specific aero kit and trim pieces painted in BMW’s Aluminum Rhombicle Anthracite color. There’s also the option of the M Adaptive Suspension, which uses data from sensors and GPS to adjust steering, dampers and shifting characteristics as needed.
